The 2003 Major League Soccer draft drew heavily from the collegiate ranks as fifty-four of the fifty-eight players selected were college soccer players.
Forty-four of the fifty-four college players selected were seniors, eight were juniors and two were sophomores. To be eligible for the draft non-seniors had to give up their remaining NCAA eligibility. Of the 4 individuals selected who didn't come from the collegiate ranks, 1 came from the U.S. U-20 National Team, 1 from U-18 National Team, and 2 from the U-17 National Team.
There were a total of six rounds of selections with ten players selected in each of the first five rounds and eight selections made in the sixth round. As expected almost all of the non-seniors selected were drafted in the early rounds. Both of the college sophomores selected were first round picks. Of the eight college juniors selected three went in round 1, three in round 2, one in round 3 and one in the 5th round. Two of the players without collegiate playing experience were first round selections and two were picked in the second round.
