Text Box: North Carolina 3 - Stanford 2 - With ten minutes left in the game Stanford held a 2-0 advantage over the North Carolina Tar Heels and it appeared that the Cardinal was on track to advance to the NCAA National Championship match just as they had back in 1998.  Stanford took a 1-0 lead during the 25th minute of play when defender Todd Dunivant scored out of a corner kick. Senior midfielder Matt Moses served the ball into Dunivant who cleanly drove the ball through twoTar Heel defenders into the upper left corner.  Stanford got the better of the play during the first half of action but the score remained 1-0 going into intermission.  During the 77th minute of the game Stanford All-American and Pac 10 player of the year Roger Levesque increased the Cardinal lead to 2-0 when he collected a rebound off a shot by teammate Moses and drove it back into the net.  

Stanford has played excellent team defense all year allowing only 10 goals all season coming into this game.  Accordingly, their 2-0 advantage looked really big with just ten minutes remaining to be played. However the Tar Heels were not to be denied as David Testo closed the gap to 2-1 four minutes later when he went far post using his left foot from 25 yards out to close the gap to 2-1 and give North Carolina new life.  The Tar Heels wasted no time getting the equalizer a little over a minute later when they scored out of a set piece with Matt Crawford alertly driving a rebound back into the goal finding nothing but net.  Credit midfielder Noz Yamauchi and senior defender David Stokes with the double assist on Crawford’s goal.  Regulation expired with the score knotted at 2-2.  Neither team could find the back of the net during the first three overtime periods but during the fourth overtime period Midfielder Mike Gell got the game winner for North Carolina at the 135 minute mark of the contest.  The score came out of a Carolina counter attack with Gell on the receiving end of a long pass forward that he controlled and then skillfully lofted a shot over the head of Stanford keeper Andrew Terris to get the game winner.  Gell has tallied the game winner for the Tar Heels in two of their last three matches.   

North Carolina has now won in overtime in their last three games improving their record to 20-4-0.  Stanford under head coach Bret Simon finishes a remarkable season with a 19-2-1 overall record.
