Derek McElligott - forward - UMBC - Scored three second half goals as the UMBC Retrievers came back from a 1-0 half-time deficit to defeat Iona.  Added another goal in the UMBC 3-0 win over Delaware.  McElligott was named the Kappa Kick Off Classic Most Valuable Player.  The Retrievers took the tourney championship.  

 

Clint Baumstark - goalkeeper - U.A.B. - Was solid between the pipes for the Blazers making nine saves and recording his first shutout as U.A.B. defeated Coastal Carolina on the road 2-0 in their season opener.

 

Chad Severs - forward - Penn State - Severs scored in the Penn State win over Bucknell University showing that he may add to the Nittany Lion attack in 2001.

 

John  O’Hara - goalkeeper - George Mason - O’Hara faced some very talented attacking teams this weekend and had just about everything but the kitchen sink thrown at him while in goal for George Mason.  O’Hara more than held his own. For his efforts he was named the defensive MVP of the George Mason/Kappa Soccer Classic. 

 

Matt Bryant - forward - Memphis - Bryant played well in both of the Tigers games over the Labor Day Weekend.  Memphis tied Creighton 0-0 in their first match and then lost to Drake 2-1 in their second.  Bryant scored the Tigers goal in the losing cause against Drake.     

 

Brett Wiesner - forward - Washington - Wiesner scored his first collegiate goal to lead the Huskies to a 1-0 victory over Connecticut in the UConn Soccer Classic at Morrone Field.  The Huskies also got a 3-2 (OT) win against Fairleigh Dickinson.  It was a great 2001 season start for Washington.  The Huskies started the 2000 season with two losses.   

 

Scott Sealy forward, James Riley defender, Ryan Caugherty midfielder - Wake Forest - All three Wake Forest freshman played well and contributed to the Deacon wins over James Madison and George Mason.  Their play indicated they will add strength and depth to Wake Forest in 2001.

 

Matt Bly forward,  Jon Apilado midfielder,  Tony Lochhead and Neil Jones defenders, and keeper Dan Kennedy - U.C. Santa Barbara - A host of newcomers combined with veterans to give third year coach Tim Vom Steeg a 3-0 win over Long Island and a 2-0 win over Illinois-Chicago.  They all contributed.  Kennedy had two consecutive shutouts in goal for the young Gauchos as they won the Kappa Klassic.

 

Jake Jackson - midfielder - S.M.U. - Jackson played well and fit right in with the high powered S.M.U. attack adding an assist in the Mustang win over James Madison.  He looked solid and confident.  

 

Kevin Goldthwaite - midfielder - Notre Dame - Notre Dame began the Bobby Clark era with a 5-0 thumping of Big East conference foe Villanova.  In a way it was fitting that a freshman, Kevin Goldthwaite, was the first Irish player to find the back of the net to get things going for the Irish in the Clark era.  Expect more to follow.
