Brown 1 - Duke 0 - This one was played in Providence, Rhode Island at Stevenson Field with heavy rain throughout the match. The win propels the Bears from Brown, Maddog Soccer’s #23 ranked team in the country, into the third round of NCAA Tournament play to face the Connecticut Huskies who defeated Clemson to advance. Neither Duke nor Brown was able to score during the first half of play. Brown got the games only goal 10 minutes into the second half when Scott Powers skipped one into the goal from about twenty-five yards out. Anders Kelto was credited with the assist on the goal. Brown played with only 10 men for two-thirds of the match due to the fact that midfielder Adam Buchannan was shown a red card during the 21st minute of the game. Duke’s Nii-Amar Amamoo got his second yellow of the evening during the 79th minute of the match so both teams played with 10 men from that point forward. This was a very physical match as both teams gave it their all under less than ideal conditions due to the water accumulation on the field of play. Regardless, it was a very big win for the Brown program and for Coach Mike Noonan. Brown’s ability to play solid team defense has been a crucial key to their success all season. Brown is now 13-5-1 overall and Duke ends the 2000 season with a record of 15-6-1.
Virginia 2 - St. John’s 1 - The Cavaliers from the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Red Storm from the Big East Conference squared off in Charlottesville at Klockner Stadium before a crowd of almost 1,800. Virginia did what they needed to do to control the pace of this one. The Cavaliers got an early 1-0 lead when Ryan Gibbs switched the point of attack on a well played and timed cross to teammate Steve Totten who went to the lower right post for the score. Ryan Gibbs then made it 2-0 Virginia when he collected a loose ball in front of the goal and chipped it in from about four yards out. The Red Storm narrowed the gap to 2-1 with a little over a minute left in the match with Adam Maurer scoring on a header after receiving a cross from teammate Jeff Matteo. Virginia is now 17-5-1. Coach Dave Masur’s St. John’s team ends the 2000 campaign 14-5-2. The Cavaliers will host Creighton in what promises to be an exciting and explosive third round NCAA Tournament game.
Connecticut 2 - Clemson 1 (OT) - The Connecticut Huskies traveled to Clemson, South Carolina to face the Clemson Tigers in this second round NCAA match played at Riggs Field. Connecticut, ranked by Maddog Soccer as the #5 team in the country, came away with a big win to advance to the third round of play to face Brown from the Ivy League who defeated Duke University to advance. Clemson University got on the board first when their All-American Mark Lisi scored off an assist from Pablo Webster nine minutes into the game. The score remained 1-0 at halftime. During the 65th minute of play Clemson’s outstanding freshman midfielder Oskar Bringsved received his second yellow card of the match and the Tigers played with only 10 men on the field from that point forward. Connecticut picked up the attack and they were able to break through during the 86th minute of play when Huskie All-American Chris Gbandi played a nice ball to Donny Mark who used the space that he had to his advantage and drove the ball into the back of the net to tie it at 1-1. At the end of regulation the score was knotted at 1-1 so the teams went into overtime. The Big East Rookie of the year Cesar Cuellar converted on a bicycle kick during the 101st minute of the match on a goal that proved to be the game winner. Clemson ends what has proven to be a very successful 2000 season with a record of 14-4-2. Connecticut now stands at 17-3-2 and is one match away from a return trip to the College Cup. However to get there they will have to be able to get by a very determined Brown University squad.
